Shelby D. Burnside, Jr., age 70, was born in Canton, MS on October 5, 1953. Shelby passed away at St. Dominic’s Hospital on March 6, 2024, after sustaining a head injury from a fall at his home in Canton, MS.
Funeral Services for Shelby will be held on Monday, March 11 at 11:00am at the First Church of Canton, 3301 South Liberty St, Canton, MS. with a brief visitation time set for 10:00am prior to the service. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 10 at Breeland’s Funeral Home, 3304 South Liberty St, Canton, MS at 3:00pm until 5:00pm.
Shelby was well known in Madison County and the Canton Community as he served in law enforcement for 28 years. Shelby began his career as a Deputy Sheriff with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department where he served under Sheriff Jessie Hopkins as a deputy and Undersheriff. After a three-year term at the Federal Courthouse in Jackson, MS, Shelby joined the Canton Police Department as a Criminal Investigator until retiring in 2016.
Shelby is proceeded in death by his father, Shelby D. Burnside, Sr., sister, Shirley Burnside Cummins and brother-in-law, Walter Carl Cummins. Shelby is survived by wife, Margo Applewhite Burnside, sons Shelby D. Burnside, III, Rock Foster (Andrea), Waye Foster (Kim), grandchildren, Jules, Kate, George, Boggan Foster, mother, M.L. Burnside, sister, Nancy Burnside Taylor (Earl) and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the St. Dominic emergency services staff, neurology surgery doctors and staff and the neurology ICU Unit staff for the loving care provided during our time there.
