Margie Rue Haynes Manning, 90, lifelong Cantonian, passed away peacefully on Monday March 11,2024 at The Madison Health and Rehabilitation Center in Madison, MS. Visitation is Wednesday March 13,2024 at 9:30am followed by her funeral at 11:00 am at Breeland Funeral Home Canton, MS.
Margie was born July 11,1933 in Rankin County, MS to Christopher Columbus Haynes and Lucille Westbrook Haynes. She obtained her GED. She eloped and married R. K. Manning on August 30, 1949. Margie worked at E. & W. Shirt Factory, Madison County Cooperative, Canton Vocational and Technical School, Madison County Schools-Central Office, and Manning Tire Company. She was primarily a bookkeeper. Margie was a faithful member of Center Terrace Baptist Church.
Margie was a strong, fiercely independent, hard-working woman who was widowed at 49 years of age. In Margie’s early married life, she and R.K. and their sons had big gardens and would sell their fresh produce to C & C Grocery and May’s Food Mart on the Canton Square. The family also bottle-fed orphan calves and grew pigs for sale. Margie enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and loved to read Romance novels!
Margie was a very frugal person, who would pick up a penny on the pavement well into her 80’s because she might need that penny one day. But she was especially generous to her children and grandchildren, especially at Christmas, when she would hand out “Magic Envelopes!”
Margie was an invaluable asset to her son Chris and Manning Tire Company when she joined him in his business as Office manager and bookkeeper. She lovingly worked with Chris for 24 years until arthritis and neuropathy got the best of her hands and feet.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband R. K. Manning and son Kirk Manning, her in-laws Titus C. Manning and Tilda Moulder Manning, her brother John Ellis Haynes, and sisters Laura Ann Whitehead, Bobbie Carol Haynes, Mary Cunningham, and Betty Bradshaw.
Survivors include her sons Bob Manning (Suzie) and Chris Manning (Mary), sister Carolyn Saxton, Grandchildren Spencer Manning (Laurie), Casey Manning Barber (Jason), Matthew Manning (Kacey), and Mark Manning (Hailey). Great-grandchildren Lettie Anne Barber Tucker (Kyle), Owen Barber, Ella Barber, Archer Barber, Mary Spencer Manning, Harris Manning, Mark Mosby Manning, Mary Katherine Manning, and Clark Manning and numerous nieces and nephews.
